When can I take lessons and my exam for a light motor?

A light motor has a maximum power of 11 kW. You can take lessons for this class when you are 17 and have passed the theory exam. You must be at least 18 to take the practical exam for the 11 kW licence.

When can I take lessons and take my exam for a medium-heavy motor?

A medium-heavy motorcycle has a maximum power output of 35 kW. The minimal age depends on your driving experience. If you already have your license for a light motor (A1)? Then you can take lessons at 19 years old for a medium-heavy motor. Without this license you will have to wait until you are at least 20.

To take the practical exam you must be at least 20 years old. To take the practical exam for an A2 license you also need to have an A1 license. (you need to have this A1 license for at least 2 years before you can take this exam.)

You will need:

  • Proof of identity (For age verification)

When can I take lessons and take my exam for a heavy motor?

A heavy motor has a maximum power of 35 kW or more. You have to be at least 21 to take lessons. The minimum age to take the exam depends on your driving experience.

-Don’t have any driving experience? Or do you have your medium-heavy license (A2) for less than 2 years? Then you will be able to take the exam for a heavy motor when you are 21, you will get a license A with the note code 80. The first 2 years you will only be able to drive heavy motors with 3 wheels. After 2 years the note code 80 will expire and you will be able to drive all heavy motors. If you are younger than 24 when the code expires? Then you need to request a new license without the note at the township.

-Do you already have a license for a medium-heavy motor (A2) for at least 2 years? Then you will be able to take the heavy motor exam at 22 and up. You will have a license without limitations and can ride all heavy motors.

-If you are not in possession of a medium-heavy motor license (A2) but want the (A) Category license without limitations? Then you have to be at least 24 years old to take the exam. After than you will be able to drive all heavy motors.

If you have your A license, you also get your A1 and A2 license. This also applies if you have the code 80 rule. You can drive a light and medium-heavy motor with both licenses.

Code 80 on the A-license

The minimum age to take the heavy motor category (A) is 21 years. If you get the A-license before you turn 24, you might get the note code 80 on your license. This depends on if you already have you A2-license and how long you have it. With code 80 you can only ride a heavy motor with 3 wheels, a light motor (A1) and a medium-heavy motor (A-2).

Code 80 expires 2 years after getting your A-license or if you turn 24 before that time. If you already have your A2 license before you get your A license, the code 80 will expire 2 years after getting your A2 license.

If the code expires, you can also ride a heavy motor (A) You won’t have to take an exam but if you are not 24 you will have to request a new license at the township. If you don’t the code 80 won’t expire untill you turn 24.

Examples

Here are 2 examples of getting your A license if you already have your A2 license.

  1. You get your A2 license when you are 20 (medium-heavy category) by taking the AVB and AVD exam. You will have the note code 80 on your license. If you have your A2 license 2 years at this point, (so on your 22th) the code 80 will expire. But you will have to request a new license at the township.
  2. You get your A2 (medium category) license when you are 20. If you already have the A2 license 2 years, you wil get your A license (heavy category) via “het getrapte traject”, if so you will note get code 80 on your license.
